DescriptionAlocasiamacrorrhizos (alsoknown as Alocasia macrorrhiza) isalso known as the 'Giant Elephant Ear'. It is a fantastic specimen plant for that tropicallook, and is also a great indoor plant. It has large, glossy emeraldgreen leaves up to 1 metre long, held stiffly upwards, withprominent veining on the underside of the leaves.
The plant will easily grow to 2 -3 metres in goodconditions in the ground. Ifgrown in a pot, it will not reach its full potential, but still expectat least 1 to 1.5 metres (or more) if your pot is large enough. This is a very fastgrowing Alocasia. In good conditions, a baby (20cmhigh) will reach the size in the first 2 photos (1.5 metresplus) in lessthan a year. I growmine in well rotted cow manure and they just go crazy with their growth.Because it grows so fast, itis a great plant for those of you who have nice enough summers, but toocold winters. Youcan grow it outdoors during the spring and summer, where it will reachits full size in a season. Digthis up and bring it indoors for the winter, and then next year plantit back outdoors again.Havingsaid that, Alocasia macrorrhizos is reasonably cold hardy, and would befine down to Zone 9, maybe even a bit colder in the right microclimate.
It tolerates a very mildfrost. After a few years left inthe ground, it will develop a treelike stem, as seen in the third photo.Likeall Alocasias, this plant requires warmth and humidity. Thesoilshould be rich but well drained, and the plant appreciates frequentwatering (daily), especially in hot weather and as the plant growslarger. However, fyou live in a colder area, it is best to reduce watering during winter, particularly while the plant is smaller.
Too much water will rot the tuber. It is easy to grow in eithersun or in shade. Bright light ispreferred, but it will do well in anything up to 80%shade. The plantsinthe photos grow in full sun.Once it gets big enough, itwill start to produce offsets (baby plants) which can be easilytransplanted. At a glance:Suitable forZones: 9- 12 (see my )Sun requirements: FullSun to deep shade (up to 80% shade)Moisture requirements: Moderate to high, well drained soilSize when fullygrown: 2to 3 metres (6 - 9+ feet), similar spread wideNot terribly frost tolerant, may take a light, short frostSuitable as an indoor and large containerplant.
Gyptian hold you video download. Of all the ones from the past year, this one has probably gotten the most number of plays.
We fish for Pike, Perch on ice in winter, Lake Trout, and Whitefish(we try, but are yet to catch any!) We both get a kick out of the podcast as it takes us into fishing for species and methods beyond our freshwater/spinning reel norms. Keep up the good work! We are always looking forward to having your podcast take us away to new fishing. Alaskan Tundra DLC Now Available + Steam Winter Sale!
