Philip Morris launched the Marlboro brand in 1924 as a woman’s cigarette, based on the slogan “Mild As May”. The name was taken from a street in London where PM’s British factory was located. In the 1920s, advertising for the cigarette was primarily based around how ladylike the filter cigarette was, in an attempt to appeal to the mass market.[5] To this end, the filter had a printed red band around it to hide lipstick stains, calling it “Beauty Tips to Keep the Paper from Your Lips”

After scientists published a major study linking smoking to lung cancer in the 1950s, Philip Morris repositioned Marlboro as a men’s cigarette in order to fit a market niche of men who were concerned about lung cancer. At the time, filtered cigarettes were considered safer than unfiltered cigarettes, but had been until that time only marketed to women. Men at the time indicated that while they would consider switching to a filtered cigarette, they were concerned about being seen smoking a cigarette marketed to women.[1]

The red and white package was designed by the Designer Frank Gianninoto. The repositioning of Marlboro as a men’s cigarette was handled by Chicago advertiser Leo Burnett. The proposed campaign was to present a lineup of manly figures: sea captains, weightlifters, war correspondents, construction workers, etc. The cowboy was to have been the first in this series. While Philip Morris was concerned about the campaign, they eventually gave the green light.[1]

In order to comply with a 2006 court ruling in United States v. Philip Morris USA, Inc., et al.,[6] Philip Morris (and all other cigarette companies) is now prevented from using words such as “Lights”, “Ultra-Lights”, “Medium”, “Mild”, or any similar designation that yields a false impression that they are safer than regular full flavor cigarettes. Thus Marlboro and other cigarette companies must use only color-coding instead; for example Marlboro Lights are now called Marlboro Gold Pack.

Philip Morris responded to the popularity of Pall Mall, the number three brand, by pushing Marlboro Special Blends, a lower-priced cigarette.

The comedian John Oliver created a new mascot for Phillip Morris International, the makers of Marlboro cigarettes, named Jeff the Diseased Lung in a Cowboy Hat. Jeff the diseased lung appeared on international billboards in Uruguay, t-shirts sent to Togo, and caused the creation of several YouTube videos and the hashtag ‘#JeffWeCan’

One of my friends told me to try this cig. I don't know if this is even a real cigarette since I taste/smell almost no tobacco, only menthols. Tastes kinda disgusting, but is covered by the strong spearminty scent, especially when the ice ball is crushed. Love the mint, but not the tobacco.

I had to order these online since I live in the US, but they were sold for a fairly good price. I'm so glad I ordered them, because they are THE BEST cigarettes I've ever had. The taste before you crush the ball tastes like a fairly strong menthol, but after you crush it, it tastes fantastic. It's sort of similar to Marlboro Smooths in the taste, but a whole lot better and not as sweet. They don't last very long for me, and I don't get my nicotine fix from them if I only smoke one, but the taste of them outweighs that. I am so in love with these, and I wish they sold them here in the US.

Okay, so first I have to say, the pack design is amazing, as a rating of 1/10 it gets a 10 of 10, coolest pack ever made in my opinion, just so you know, I'm American, I bought these from China online for a pretty high price of 15$ (because it was sold as a collectible) Okay, so you can see where you crush the ice ball, it indicates where it is on the filter. I started it up by smoking it without the ball crushed and it tasted just like Marlboro Menthol Light, menthol taste, not strong, but after crushing the iceball, the taste was like smoking Orbit mint gum, it's great. The con of these cigs are it doesn't give a really good buzz. It's like smoking a light, I could barely feel anything. A really good thing about these though is I smoked two and it didn't leave my fingers smelling like nasty tobacco, it was really cool. The pack design alone will make all your friends want some!
